ABOUT THE BISHOP

Rt Revd Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obi

Right Reverend Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obi is the Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). He succeeded His Grace, the Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Izundu Nmesinwa Okpala, who retired on September 17, 2019, as the pioneer Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi. Ndubuisi became Bishop-elect on Wednesday, August 21, 2019. He was consecrated at Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, on Tuesday, 24th September 2019, by Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, His Grace, the Most Rev. Nicholas Dikeriehi Ologodo Okoh (now retired). The service of enthronement of the Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi as the Bishop, Diocese of Nnewi, took place at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary, Nnewi in Anambra State of Nigeria, on Friday, 27th September 2019.

Bishop Ndubuisi Obi is from Nnewichi in Nnewi town, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State. He was born on December 17, 1965 to the family of Rev. Canon Abel Okwuchukwu Obi and Mrs. Jane Uzoma Obi. His father retired as a Clergy in the Diocese On the Niger, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). His mother was the pioneer Principal of Holy Innocents Juniorate Convent, Nkpor in Anambra State. He has two brothers and two sisters. The elder brother, Sir K. C. Obi, is a Knight of Saint Christopher, while the younger brother, Venerable Dr. Kamtochukwu Obi, is a medical Doctor and a Clergy in the Diocese of Aguata in Anambra State. Mrs. Chioma Adaobi Okigbo is his immediate younger sister while Mrs. Chiagozie Chikelu is the youngest sister.

The Bishop attended Central School, Urban Primary School, Nsukka, and Ezechima Primary School, Onitsha. He completed his secondary school at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha in 1982. He furthered his education in theology and graduated from St. Paul’s University College, Awka (SPUCA) in 2003, with Diploma in Theology. After obtaining a Diploma in Theology and Diploma in Religious Studies from SPUCA (in affiliation with UNN), he went back to the same institution for a Bachelors Degree in Religious Studies (B.A. Rel.). In 2016, he obtained a Masters Degree in Religious Studies (with a bias in the New Testament), at Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary (CGTS), Abeokuta, Ogun State (affiliated to Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo), Nigeria.

Bishop Ndubuisi Obi got married to Mrs. Ukamaka Zipporah Obi on May 20, 1995 and God has really blessed them. They have four biological and four Foster children.

He had been in an active business at Main Market, Onitsha, for more than fourteen years. In the year 2000, he answered the call into full-time ministry. Before this time, he had held many positions at Saint Mark’s Anglican Church, Omagba, Onitsha, Anambra State, which include: People’s Warden, Secretary of the Parochial Church Committee, Secretary and Chief Recorder of the Harvest Committee, Vice Chairman of Men’s Group 4, Choir Chairman, Leader of Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF), and Leader of the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion (EFAC). In fact, he was willing to serve the Lord in the Church in every capacity.

It was the then Bishop of the Diocese On the Niger, Rt. Rev. Ken Sandy Okeke, that sent Ndubuisi Obi to SPUCA, when he submitted himself for a full-time Church ministry in the year 2000. At SPUCA, he was the President of the Students’ Union Government, for the 2002/2003 academic session.

Upon his graduation in 2003, he was made a Deacon on 14th December 2003, by Bishop Ken Okeke. His Priesthood Ordination took place in December 2004. His preferment as a Reverend Canon by Rt. Rev. Ken Sandy Okeke was in December 2010. The Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo preferred him as an Archdeacon in December 2011.

He served at Saint Silas Anglican Church, Enekwasumpu, from 2004 to 2011. He later he moved to Ascension Anglican Church, Isiafor, Obosi, as the Vicar, and at the same time the Archdeacon of Ascension Archdeaconry, from 2012 to 2017. He served as the Vicar of Saint Augustine’s Anglican Church, 3-3, and at the same time as the Archdeacon of Divine Grace Archdeaconry, Onitsha, from 2018 to September 2019.

As a Clergy of the Diocese On the Niger, he held the following positions: pioneer Chaplain of the Association of Evangelists On the Niger, Coordinator of the Church Workers Prayer Force, Chairman of the Directorate for Missions and Evangelism, Diocesan Sports Director, Provincial Chairman of the Anglican Prayer Rally of Anambra State (APRAS), Commandant of the Fresh Manna Conference, Chairman of Divine Grace Auxiliary of the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) and State Patron of the Nigeria Police Force Stakeholders Forum, Anambra State Chapter. Truly, he rendered great service to the Diocese On the Niger and upheld the high standards of the Christian ministry. He is a child of God who loves the Lord Jesus Christ. He is a true servant of God, an accomplished evangelist and a sound biblical teacher who has a great heart for the Word of God. In fact, evangelism and teaching of God’s Word remains the core of his ministry. As the Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi, he has made person to person and street to street witnessing or evangelism the main task of every believer in the Diocese.
